Modern Web Design

An introductory course on how to use modern techniques to create beautiful things for the web. The course will cover HTML5, CSS, grid layouts, UI frameworks and some introduction to Javascript, jQuery and other libraries that allow you to create interactive content.

Class will meet Thursday evenings from 7-9pm starting May 2nd. $50 students, $100 non-students. Instructor: Ian Bishop.


Web Wizardry Workshop

Now in its third term, this fun, low-key group workshop will take the "magic" out of programming for the web. Course projects for the summer term will revolve around creating a microblogging platform – think Twitter, but without the celebrity oversharing.

Workshop will meet Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8pm starting May 1st. Students only, free of charge. Instructor: Prof. Rick Wightman.

Find out how falling asleep on your keyboard can work for you: This workshop will explore the Perl programming language and compare techniques for executing tasks in Perl vs. in Java. Expand your coding horizons!

Winter 2013 - UNB Student Pitch Competition

Each year, the Dr. J. Herbert Smith Centre for Technology Management and Entrepreneurship hosts a pitch competition open to all UNB Students.

This year's competition will be held on Thursday, March 28th. Finalists will have three minutes to pitch their idea to a panel of judges, with cash prizes for the top pitches.

The deadline to submit an online registration form and a 1-2 page executive summary of your idea is Friday, March 1st.

Participation is free, and a great opportunity for public speaking practice.

Senior architects and developers from Accreon will present a panel discussion on their experiences applying information technology to real-world projects, and provide valuable insights about working in the business and IT consulting world.

Formed in Fredericton in 2008, Accreon provides business and IT consulting to public and private sector clients in the government, healthcare and energy industries.

This fun, low-key group workshop will take the "magic" out of programming for the web. Topics covered may include javascript, python, shell scripting, dealing with web servers and managing web content.

Class will meet Monday afternoons from 3:30-4:30pm starting January 21st. No cost, no prerequisite - first-years welcome! Instructor: Prof. Rick Wightman.

Learn the basics of Android app development, including environment setup, application life cycle, UI design/construction, activities/intents, and views/widgets.

Class will meet Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm starting January 22nd. $50 students, $100 non-students. Prerequisite: Working knowledge of Java (CS 1073 required; CS 1083 recommended) Instructor: Nick Fitzpatrick.


Employability Crash Course

Designed for 1st and 2nd year students preparing to go out on a co-op workterm, this six week crash course will cover the more practical aspects of professional software development. Be better prepared for the expectations of your potential employers with an overview of source control, testing tools and more.

Class will meet Thursday evenings at 7pm starting January 24th. No cost, no prerequisite - intended for first and second year students. Instructor: Ian Bishop.

Fall 2012 - NBIF Breakthru Info Session

Breakthru, New Brunswick’s Business Plan Competition, encourages the creation and development of entrepreneurial, innovative business ventures in the province. Hosted by NBIF and Cox & Palmer, this province-wide business plan competition provides participants with a unique opportunity to access start-up capital, mentoring, and support.

Participants will compete for over $250,000 in cash and professional services.

The prizes will help to launch three innovative businesses. The grand prize winner will receive a $100,000 cash investment from NBIF, along with professional services from Cox & Palmer. The other two winners will each receive $50,000, plus services including legal, marketing and accounting.

Fredericton Developer User Group (FDUG) presents a talk on Windows app development.

Details: In this session, Gerard will provide an overview of creating a C# Windows Store app (formerly known as Windows 8 'metro' apps) with a WebView control, integrating a settings flyout into the Windows Settings charm, using RoamingSettings to share settings across devices your app is installed on, and passing data from JavaScript to the C# code.

Fall 2012 - Volunteer Opportunity: AppInventor

This is a volunteer/outreach opportunity for students to work with CS Square and the Fredericton Developer User Group to put together a workshop for high-schoolers or first years in other faculties, designed around MIT's AppInventor.

AppInventor is designed to allow students to create Android apps without prior programming experience - watch a video about the program here.

Curriculum is already available for AppInventor classes, so we are looking for volunteers to help select material for a 1 or 2 hour session, and/or facilitate local workshop delivery.

Fall 2012 - FDUG October: An Introduction to Ruby

Fredericton Developer User Group (FDUG) presents a talk on the Ruby language.

Date: Wednesday, October 24th

Presenter: Ian Bishop

Details: This will be an introductory talk on the way of Ruby, its core philosophies and semantics. My goal is to help you construct a mental model of how Ruby fits into your every day life as a developer. I will outline how Ruby's strengths allow you to write beautiful code without cost of agility. Some time will be spent in a live-coding demonstration using Ruby's powerful REPL (Read-Eval-Print Loop) allowing you to see Ruby at work, first-hand.

Speaker Bio: Ian Bishop is an undergrad student in his final year at UNB Computer Science, with a major in Theoretical Computation and a minor in Mathematics. Ian currently works at UserEvents, a local Fredericton startup, as a front-end engineer programming in Clojure. He has been writing Ruby since 2007, maintains and commits to several Ruby open-source projects and has a wide range of development experience with Ruby on Rails. He currently is an active participant and student leader of CS Square at UNB, hosting several Ruby workshops and hackathons.

Nick is a UNB Computer Science graduate with a strong interest in mobile application development. His Android expertise comes from both personal work, and his honours thesis "Raw Image Processing on Mobile Platforms", which focused on efficient ways to process and display images using the Android framework.

Fall 2012 - Discussion Circle #3: Innovations in Cyber Security

Lynne Ellyn, former Senior VP and CIO of DTE Energy, led a discussion of her work in cyber security.

Lynne began her career as a programmer and recently retired from her role providing top-level IT leadership for one of the largest energy companies in the US.

Lynne discussed cyber security in the energy industry, as well as her experiences bridging business and IT leadership.
